It is fast approaching, that special time of the year…Movember! What, the heck, is Movember you ask? During the month of November, men around the world show support and raise awareness about testicular and prostate cancers, and men’s mental health issues. They do this by growing their facial hair out, into what are usually crazy styles, from November 1st to November 30th. The idea being…the crazier the moustache, the more attention/awareness is created!
Here are some fun examples of Movember moustaches…
The idea for Movember first began in Adelaide, South Australia in 1999. It was a group of guys at a pub who coined the term “Movember” and the idea of growing moustaches for charity throughout the month of November.
In 2004, the Movember Foundation charity was organized. Their motto ‘Change the Face of Men’s Health’.
The Movember Foundation has since raised more than $175-million worldwide. It is also now in South Africa, Europe, and North America.
The focus of Movember Foundation is to reduce the number of preventable deaths of men by increasing early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments. The Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of family history of cancer and mental illness . It also encourages men to adopt a healthier lifestyle, along with annual check-ups, and to seek therapy when necessary. Their ultimate goal is to reduce the number of men prematurely dying by 25%!
*Men experience worse longer-term health than women
*It’s thought that rates of prostate cancer will double in the next 15 years
*Testicular cancer rates have doubled in the last 50 years
*Testicular cancer most commonly occurs in younger men ages 20 to 34
*Testicular cancer is very treatable, especially if it is detected in its early stages
*Poor mental health leads to half a million men taking their own life every year. That’s one every minute.
*78% of suicides are men
*Over 70% of men in the prison system suffer from one or two different mental disorders
*Men die on average six years earlier than woman
I encourage all of you to help this cause in any way you can! Please visit Movember Foundation to learn more about this very worthy cause and to get INVOLVED!
